The blank canvas can be intimidating. For me, it is most often. When I paint outside I paint quickly and get right into the work, so I am not lingering on the white page. In studio I put a colour on the canvas in order to get rid of the white. I have moved away from underpainting while I paint outside as I usually forget to bring enough water.
My underpainting is usually a quick splash of paint mixed with a lot of water. This colour sometimes shines through the work and sometimes it doesn't. What it does do is alter slightly the colours that are used on top of the underpainting. I have considered splashing paint on the canvas ahead of going outside to paint, I just haven't done it yet.
This is a picture of how my outdoor work space looks most often now. I carry my paints in the backpack, I have a collapsable tripod, and a piece of to place my palette on. I used a wet palette sometimes which didn't work as well for me. I no longer use it.
